The Kamitsu-michi, or Upper Road, was one of the key official roads of ancient Japan, later evolving into a popular highway in the early modern period. During this era, it was also known as Kamikaido.

Originally developed in the Asuka Period, the Kamitsu-michi served as a major north-south route, linking present-day Nara City and Sakurai City via Tenri City.

While Kamitsu-michi lost its importance as an official road after the Heian Period, it found new life as a pilgrimage route due to the spread of Buddhism. By the early modern period, though some sections of the road shifted westward, it remained a key thoroughfare connecting towns like Nara, Ichii, Tanbaichi, Miwa, and Sakurai. Pilgrims used the road to visit renowned temples such as Hasedera, Muro-ji, and Miwa Shrine. Additionally, Kamitsu-michi became one of the routes to Ise, functioning as part of the Ise Kaido—a vital path connecting Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, and the Ise region.
