Michai Eminescu attended the German-speaking secondary school and later the German upper grammar school in Czernowitz, the capital of Bukovina, which belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Eminescu later developed into one of the most important Romanian poets of the 19th century. His work set standards for the development of the modern Romanian standard language.
