The founder of the church and monastery in Czerniaków was Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski - Grand Marshal of the Crown, friend of the Bernardine Order. The construction of a brick church on the plan of an isosceles cross, with a dome and a six-sided presbytery began in 1691. The works were carried out based on the plans and under the general supervision of the court architect of King Jan III Sobieski - Tylman of Gameren, a Dutchman. The direct executor of Tylman of Gameren's plans was Izydor Affaita.
