The path was inaugurated in its current course in Weimar's cultural year of 1999. The name is a tribute to the Russian Tsar's daughter and her great services to promoting education and art in the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.

It was created in the 18th century as an English landscape park and served as the summer residence of Duchess Anna Amalia of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.
The park was once a meeting place for the Weimar court society and its guests, including famous personalities such as Goethe, Herder and Schiller.
Today it is a popular place for walks, nature observation and cultural events.
