"Born in Biarritz in 1926, Maurice Abeberry died near this site on February 21, 1988 at the Zizkoitz pass, during a walk at La Rhune.A doctor of law, Maurice Abeberry became a lawyer in 1952. The following year, he was elected to the Biarritz Municipal Council. Co-editor in 1963 of the Itxassou charter, he devoted himself for a long time to the defense of Basque political refugees. Passionate about jazz, he is one of the founders of the Hot-club of Bayonne. Member of the Biarritz-Athlétic-Club (Basque pelota club) and the Basque Ballets "Oldarra", he became their President. He was also President of the Basque Country Pelota League, then, in 1972, of the French Pelota Federation. Member of the French Olympic Committee, he represented pelota at the Mexico Olympic Games.
