Carthage was a metropolis in North Africa near what is now Tunis in Tunisia. In ancient times, Carthage was initially the capital of the sea and trading power of the same name. The inhabitants of Carthage were called Punians (derived from Phoenicians) by the Romans. After the destruction of Carthage by the Romans, the Carthaginian Empire fell in the 2nd century BC. In the Roman Empire; Carthage was re-founded under Gaius Iulius Caesar and soon rose again to become an important city. Only with the end of antiquity came the end of the importance of the place.
