The Royal Chapel of the Palace of the Passages, now the current Chapel of the Practical School of Artillery, was built by King D. Jo. V, probably in 1728, to serve as a spiritual consolation for guests and the royal family during their stay at the Palace of the Passages.

With a simple layout, which is believed to be the work of the architect of Custos in Vieira, the temple is an example of palatine architecture at the eastern end of the Passages Palace.

Its main façade presents a small niche with an image of Santo Antonio, believed to be from the old chapel of S. Fernando / S. Antonio do Outeiro. Inside, it consists of a unique nave, high altar, baptistery, royal oratory and the sacristy.

It is also worth mentioning the floor of the altarpiece, which is covered by a cannon vault, with paintings in the style of John V, where perhaps the four evangelists are represented, surrounded by wreaths and some medallions with Latin couplets.

The continuous lamb border of blue and white tiles that surrounds the entire chapel, about 1.80 m high, is made up of various figurative panels that can be dated to 1750, except for one with the image of Santa Bárbara, patronage of the artillery, which dates back to 1972.

On the altar there are two images, one of Our Lady of Conceeo, in padded wood, at the end of the century. XVII and another of Santa Barbara, which was brought to the lordship of the army during the passage of the chapel.

Next to the sacristy is the Royal Oratory, where the royalty attended mass, and other storage rooms.

The chapel was the mother church of Vendas Novas from 1843 to 1969 and, despite belonging to the Practical School of Artillery, weddings and occasional masses are currently held there.
