Vendas Novas is a district (Concelho) and a city (Cidade) in the district of Évora in Portugal with 10,625 inhabitants (as of April 19, 2021).
The place was founded after Theodosius I, Count of Braganza, had an inn set up here around 1530. It was located about halfway on the road from Évora to Lisbon. The name comes from the Portuguese terms Vendas (ancient for stall) and Novo (for new).[4] The settlement that subsequently emerged here grew over the years.
