Mesnil is an Old French, obsolete word meaning "farm" or "settlement". It has the same root as the French word "maison" ("house"). The suffix "-il" makes it a diminutive. Mesnil, and its derivatives Ménil, Maisnil, Maînil and Mainil, appear in dozens of place names in France, Belgium and other French-speaking areas.
