The Museum of Fine Arts, one of Kyrgyzstan's oldest cultural institutions, was founded in 1935. Originally known as the National Art Gallery, it was housed in St. Nicholas Church in Oak Park. The museum's original collection consisted of donated works of art from prestigious Soviet galleries.
In 1974, the museum moved to its current location on Sovetskaya Street, while the former church became the gallery of the Artists' Union.
