The northernmost fortress in the world and the easternmost in Norway. The first fortress was built here around 1305 and surrounded by a round wall in the following years. It served as a bulwark in the conflict with the Russian Republic of Novgorod. In the 1330s the complex was rebuilt and is said to have had a square shape after that. The current fortress has the shape of a star with eight rounded points. It was built between 1734 and 1738.
It is also open in the evenings during the summer months and you can enjoy a lovely atmosphere.
