From 1780 onwards, Prince Johann Georg (1748–1811) had Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff build a small classical country house in a floodplain forest north of the then urban development of Dessau. The area surrounding the building was converted into a spacious garden in the English style. Similar to Wörlitz, it received numerous classical and romantic park buildings and sculptures that were harmoniously embedded in nature.

The most important include the so-called Fremdenhaus, the "Roman Ruin", a monopteros (Ionic round temple), two replicas of ancient archways and the Wallwitzburg.

The Beckerbruch (97 ha), which adjoins the actual Georgengarten (21.3 ha), was left as a natural floodplain and floodplain landscape, but was also embellished with small architectural features and monuments. The principle of the gradual transition from the artistically designed landscape garden to the natural landscape is particularly impressive here. With the Elbe Pavilion and the artificial ruins of "Wallwitzburg", two points were created that allowed a wide view over the garden landscape along the Elbe.
