There are around 1,400 species of bats worldwide. The serotine bat, the pipistrelle bat and the Daubenton's bat are the most common representatives of the 25 native species found in Germany. Almost all of them can be admired in Baden-Württemberg.

The last 50 years, however, have brought them to the brink of extinction. Lack of food, for example due to the use of insecticides or the loss of landscape diversity, loss of roosts and a lack of roosts are the main causes of a dramatic decline in bat populations in Germany.
