Rodalquilar, in the district of Níjar in the Andalusian province of Almería, is a former mining town in what is now the Cabo de Gata Natural Park. Its history can be traced back to the beginning of the sixteenth century, when Spaniards and Genoese mined alum in the El Playazo valley of Rodalquilar in the diocese of Almería. Mining was carried out on a varying scale from the sixteenth to the twentieth century for different minerals and rocks: amethyst for jewellery in the eighteenth century, kaolin for ceramics in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, granite for paving in the twentieth century, lead and silver ores in the nineteenth century, and gold in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In 1966, the gold mine was closed by the Adaro company, which owned the mine. In 1989, the mine was temporarily reopened, only to be closed permanently in 1990.
