On June 20, 1944, a German military doctor was shot dead in a local bar in Gubbio by the GAP, the communist urban guerrilla group. German troops then arbitrarily arrested numerous civilians in Gubbio. Forty of them were shot at dawn on June 22 at the wall in front of the mausoleum, which still shows the bullet holes today, and buried on site. A total of 38 men and two women aged between 17 and 61.

Shortly after the war, it was decided to build a mausoleum for the 40 martyrs as an eternal reminder and warning.

The memorial is open every day except Mondays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (summer) or 5 p.m. (winter).
