In 1491, Frederick of Aragon laid the first stone for the construction of the mother church of Ferrandina. This is all we know about the construction of this place of worship, the rest is lost in the corridors of history. The church probably stands on the same site where another sacred place once stood. Some scholars hypothesize that it was the ancient mother church of Obelanum, dedicated to the cult of San Lorenzo.

The church has a façade almost devoid of decorations, only the three rose windows and the three portals stand out; the central portal is accompanied by two historiated columns. The interior of the church dates back to the 18th century, but does not disdain the echoes of a typically Baroque taste. Inside, the two colonnades, placed on the sides, divide the space and form three naves; the entablature of the central nave supports bundles of barrel arches. The ceiling is divided into bays, each of which forms elliptical domes on which the same motif as the central dome is found, giving the effect of a delicate embroidery in pastel shades. The central altar is a masterpiece of inlay, made with polychrome marbles that create a play of light and color.
