The Schällbach is a shallow stream that rises on the meadows above Breitenbach. The stream meanders through the forest in numerous curves until it disappears into various sinkholes shortly before and after the Schällbachponor. The Schällbachponor forms a much older fossil outflow of the Schällbach.
The previously disappeared water can be reached at the deepest point of the cave, where it collects in a siphon and later emerges in the tube spring in the Kaltbrunnental (proven by dyeing tests).
