The crossing is always a welcome change and also an experience. Beautiful views of the Danube are a little bonus!

The roller ferry in Spitz on the Danube is a historic and fascinating means of transport that is part of the unique cultural heritage of the Wachau. It connects Spitz with the opposite village of Arnsdorf and offers a traditional and environmentally friendly way to cross the Danube. Roller ferries have existed for centuries and used to be an important connection before bridges crossed the Danube. The ferry in Spitz is still operated today to preserve the tradition and charm of the Wachau. In addition to its practical use, the roller ferry now also serves as a tourist attraction that offers a glimpse into the past. The crossing takes about 5-10 minutes and offers a wonderful view of the Wachau landscape, which is characterized by vineyards and historical sites. The trip is quiet and allows you to experience the Danube up close. From the ferry you have a fantastic view of the picturesque village of Spitz with its famous vineyards and historic buildings.

The rolling ferry connects the towns of Spitz and Arnsdorf by water. The ferry, consisting of two connected hulls, has a carrying capacity of 20 t and transports both people and motor vehicles. The loading deck substructure is made of steel, while the superstructure is made of wood. The catamaran construction ensures good stability. The ferry is held by a 485 m long cable that is stretched across the Danube and anchored in strong towers on the banks. Ferry and carrying cable are connected with a so-called yaw cable. No expensive energy is required for the drive, only the flow of the Danube is used. The rolling ferry has a crew of four, each working in pairs. The roller ferry is also available for weddings. You can find more information about weddings on the rolling ferry at the municipal office.

An art object by the Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson has been installed on the ferry since 2004.

Directly on the roll ferry is a well where you can replenish the drinking water bottles.
