The present-day Michelau community part of Schwürbitz was first mentioned in 1180, when Bishop Otto II of Bamberg allowed the Langheim monastery to build a mill "sub monte Gorz", i.e. at the foot of the Göritze mountain. At that time, the Main was already an important waterway for transporting wood and goods of various kinds. And at the foot of the mountain, crystal-clear water bubbled from a spring. This is why settlement began in the valley directly on the Main below the Göritze. Only gradually did further development and settlement of the town move up the mountainside.
