The Tactical Air Force Squadron 71 "Richthofen" (TaktLwG 71 "R") is a traditional unit of the Air Force. The TaktLwG 71 "R" is stationed at the Wittmundhafen air base, the squadron staff and troop accommodation are located in the barracks on the outskirts of Wittmund.[1] The squadron provides the alert squadron for northern Germany. The aircraft model currently used is the Eurofighter Typhoon. The unit was established in 1958 as Jagdgeschwader 71. In 1961 it was given the traditional name "Richthofen". As a result of the decommissioning of the F-4F Phantom II weapon system, the squadron was reduced in size in 2013 and placed under the Tactical Air Force Squadron 31 "Boelcke" as the Tactical Air Force Group "Richthofen". On July 1, 2016, the tactical air force group became an independent squadron again. It has up to 28 Eurofighter Typhoons.
