The Brisas Environmental Protection Area was created in 1992 by law 1.918, with the aim of protecting the mangrove and sandbank ecosystems that bear witness to the landscape that exists on the coast of Sepetiba Bay.
It has significant historical and archaeological value, as it houses the headquarters of the old Caieira Farm, evidence of Sambaquis - ancient deposits formed by shells, kitchen utensils and skeletons accumulated by populations that inhabited the coast in prehistoric times, in addition to one of the landmarks of the Royal Farm of Santa Cruz.
