From 1401 onwards, the inhabitants of Wagenberg fulfilled their religious obligations in the church of Terheijden, which was consecrated that year. It was actually just a chapel that had been built there. This chapel was built at the request of the people of Hartel, Schimmer, Ter Heide and Wagenberg. After the Peace of Munster, which put an end to the 80-year war (1568-1648), a ban on practicing Catholic worship was imposed and all church buildings went to the true Christian Reformed Religion. The church of Terheijden also came into the hands of the Protestants. The Catholics were allowed to celebrate their faith in so-called barn churches.
