In 1645, small polders were made into one polder again: the Emiliapolder. The land between Geertruidenberg, Made, Hooge Zwaluwe and Drimmelen belonged to that polder and the largest part of it belonged to Geertruidenberg at that time.
In order to let the water from the polder flow to the river Amer and to ensure that the water from the river did not flow into the polder, locks had to be made: large doors to let the boats through and to hold back the water. Such a lock was built at the Herengracht in Drimmelen. In 1645, there was only that lock. The inhabitants of Drimmelen did not live there yet. They lived further away from the river. Once that lock was built, a lock keeper had to live there, so that he could open the lock doors when a boat had to pass through. That was Dirk Klaaszoon van Leeuwen. He was not only a lock keeper, but also turned his house into an inn, where people could eat and drink and, if necessary, sleep. A few fishermen from Drimmelen found that new place near the lock convenient, because it was much closer to the river. So they also moved there. Slowly more and more people came to live near the lock. This is how a new village came into being: Drimmelen op 't Spui. After a while, the last part of the name 'lock' was omitted and it was simply Drimmelen. The old village became Oud-Drimmelen.
