The Möhne Dam is one of the largest dams in Germany and, in terms of lake surface area, the largest in North Rhine-Westphalia (see list). In the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park, between Soest in the north and Arnsberg in the south, it has been damming the Möhne and Heve rivers to form the Möhnesee with a gravity dam since 1913. This stretches south of the Haarstrang in an east-west direction through the municipality named after it and has a balancing pond for the hydroelectric power station below the dam. The Ruhr Association, as the current owner and operator of the dam, has seven other dams in the Sauerland, which are mainly used to stabilize and increase the low water flow of the Ruhr.
