The steep, approximately 120-meter-high rock massif bears the remains of several fortifications and a small church and is one of the top viewing points in the town.

The Michelsberg lies between the Altmühltal and Birktal south of Kipfenberg. From the car park in Birktal (Bachgasse) you can reach the summit in about 25 minutes via the eastern ascent (marked) or alternatively via hiking trail no. 2 (Schmetterlingsweg).

If you climb the Michelsberg from the car park in Birktal via the so-called "Schlossersteig" (eastern ascent Michelsberg), you will come across a junction halfway up that leads to a small, accessible cave, the "Waggerlloch"; During excavations between 1967 and 1971, district heritage officer Karl-Heinz Rieder found numerous pottery shards and metal objects from the Early Bronze Age, Urnfield, Hallstatt and Celtic periods, but also evidence that the cave was still used as a refuge for people in the Middle Ages. According to legend, an underground passage once led from the Waggerlloch to Arnsberg Castle.

On the plateau itself there are the remains of several fortifications that were once enormous, covering more than two hectares; on the south side of the mountain tongue, which is not protected by rugged rock faces, a three-tiered system of ditches and earthen ramparts, which can still be seen, kept the enemy at bay. The first structure probably dates back to the Bronze Age. The excavations between 1903 and 1906 by Friedrich Winkelmann mainly yielded vessel fragments from the Celtic period (around 450 BC). A Roman cellar was also examined. During the Hungarian invasions (early 10th century) the fortifications served as a refuge; in the 11th and 12th centuries the complex was further strengthened, as the foundations of a tower still bear witness. Even the remains of a lime kiln from the 13th century have been discovered on the mountain.

The St. Michael Chapel, which gave the mountain its name, once stood on the tip of the mountain tongue and of which the remains of the walls are still visible; the small church, which was probably built in the early Middle Ages, was a destination for pilgrimages in the 17th century. In the 18th and early 19th centuries a hermit lived next to the chapel until the chapel and hermitage were demolished after the death of the last hermit in 1819.

From the Michelsberg you have a fantastic view of the castle 🏰 and the Altmühl valley.
