The Dienstedt mill is first mentioned in a document from the Paulinzella monastery from 1295.
In 1710, the mill was built from the rear mill garden further forward to its current location. The water was channeled into the mill ditch through a weir in the Ilm, above the Ilm bridge. The amount of water was regulated as needed using the locks.
The mill ditch, which ran parallel to Ellichlebener Straße, had to be kept in order by the mill operator or the respective owner.

The gravel trap was located directly in front of the mill. This is where washed-up gravel and other deposits were drained from the mill ditch.
Until the beginning of 1930, three water wheels were operated one after the other. Two of them directly drove the mill gears and one the wood saw frame via drive shafts. A design that had changed little over the centuries.
In 1934, a conversion took place. A turbine was installed, which now only drove one large water wheel. The mill gears and the cutting gate were set in motion as required via transmission.
An electric motor was also installed in 1952.
The mill ditch was filled in 1962 and the mill was finally closed in 1964.
This millstone is a reminder of the former mill.
