The numerous historic half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries are noteworthy. The majority are gabled, three-aisled, longitudinal plank houses. They are complemented by representatives of the two-aisled variant, especially on Lange Straße.

Many of the residential buildings from the Renaissance (second half of the 16th century) are characterized by their figurative carvings and inscriptions. At Lange Straße 93, as well as at Kirchplatz 1, there are houses with carvings of biblical scenes from around 1559-1560. At Lange Straße 29 and Mönchstraße 8, however, you can admire fan rosettes and mythical creatures on the facades of the houses. They date from around 1575-1576.

In the 17th century, these carvings were noticeably reduced. Houses built after 1600 show fewer decorations and dispense with figurative representations. Probably the oldest half-timbered house in the historic town centre of Rheda-Wiedenbrück is located at Lange Straße 60 with parts dating back to 1471.
