The tree was split in half in 1910 during a storm near the Ochsenalm, but was able to recover and formed 8 more shoots. Each branch then formed its own tree from the original main trunk. After further storms, new shoots formed, so that the tree finally had 16 treetops.
In 2005, the tree was felled and the main trunk and shoots were placed here in the forest as a cultural asset.
