Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves, a special festival every 5 years.
The occasion was a great drought in 1676. To avert a threatening crop failure, the Palmeros carried down the picture of Mary from the church of Las Nieves in the coastal city of Santa Cruz, asking for help. Already since 1534 was the Virgen de las Nieves (German Virgin of the Snow) patron saint of the island, especially against thunderstorms, pirate attacks and volcanic eruptions. When rain actually set in, the Bishop of the Canary Islands ordered Bartolomé García Ximenéz to repeat the procession every 16 years from 1680 onwards.
