    The land of 1000 ponds
    The pond landscape is located on a plateau of the Thuringian Slate Mountains and covers an area of around 75 square kilometres.
    The original 2,000 ponds (now around 600) were created by monks in the 11th/12th century for the purpose of fish farming.
