This old village was destroyed in the severe earthquake of 1953 and was never rebuilt. Nature is reclaiming the greenery here, piece by piece and house by house. This section is only a small part of the entire village; if you have enough time, you can find other "streets" full of destroyed houses just around the corner.

The ruins show the abandoned village of Alt-Valsamata (Palia Valsamata). The building standing in the center is the impressive ruin of an old church, situated amidst a vast cemetery.
The original village of Valsamata was almost completely destroyed by a catastrophic earthquake on August 12, 1953. The 6.8 magnitude quake devastated large parts of the Ionian Islands and uplifted Kefalonia by about 60 cm.
After the disaster, the village was abandoned. The inhabitants rebuilt a new village (today's Valsamata) a little further down in the valley.
Alt-Valsamata is today an atmospheric "lost place".
