This construction replaced the old suspension bridge that existed in the same location and was designed by Belgian engineer Théophile Seyrig, who had previously collaborated with Gustave Eiffel on the construction of the D. Maria Pia railway bridge.
The bridge was inaugurated in 1886 (upper deck) and 1888 (lower deck and full operation).
The D. Luís I Bridge has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1982 and as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

The Douro River is crossed by several bridges as it flows through Porto. The most famous of these is the Dom Luís I Bridge (Ponte Dom Luís I in Portuguese), which connects the city with Vila Nova de Gaia. Inaugurated at the end of the 19th century, this iron bridge is one of Porto's most iconic landmarks.
