Like many other churches on Langeland, the church has undergone a number of changes during its existence. Originally the church consisted of Romanesque elements, but later it was given a Gothic tower and porch.

In more recent times, the south portal has been slightly extended and impresses with its free columns decorated with trapezoidal capitals. The current windows are from the 19th century. On the west side of the tower you can see the initials of General Frederik Ahlefeldt Laurvig with the year 1830, who was instrumental in remodeling, restoring and expanding most of Langeland's churches during his time as owner of Tranekær Castle.
