Fires used to be a much greater danger than they are today. Open stoves, wooden houses and no modern access to water made fire regulations necessary. In Sävsjö, a voluntary fire brigade was founded in the early 1870s, which was called out when the fire watch gave the alarm. In 1925, a community fire brigade replaced the voluntary fire brigade. The fire brigade museum at Eksjöhovgård has old firefighting equipment on display. The building was previously used as a chicken coop, wood store and outhouse.
