The 59.44 hectare FFH area is characterized by open, large, lean grassland areas with numerous bushes and diverse ponds as well as the smaller, eponymous "heads" wooded with oak trees.
The use as a military training area, which lasted until 2006, led to the area's current shape. Tank drives created the numerous shallow small ponds, habitats worth protecting for amphibians such as the two FFH species of great crested newt and yellow-bellied toad. Other species include the European tree frog, the sand lizard, the natterjack and midwife toad, as well as butterflies and grasshoppers. The bird world is represented by endangered species such as the wryneck, the turtle dove and the wheatear.
