Hougoumont Farm is often referred to as the last authentic witness to the Battle of Waterloo. Sometimes it is called Goumont Farm (like the hamlet of Braine-l’Alleud).

Hougoumont Farm is undoubtedly the place that most appeals to the imagination and that has evolved the least since the Battle. In 1815, the farm was the scene of fierce fighting between the French and the English. The English front, which was about 3.5 km long, between Hougoumont and La Papelotte, resisted the French offensive on 18 June 1815. The Duke of Wellington often said that he could only win the Battle because the gates of Hougoumont were closed: “The success of the battle turned upon the closing of the gates at Hougoumont”.

After the Battle, most of the buildings in Hougoumont had been destroyed or set on fire. The walls of some of the buildings in the complex that had survived were littered with shell fragments and bullet holes. The condition of the trees was appalling: torn branches and leaves, torn trunks. The castle was reduced to a ruin and was of course uninhabitable. All that remains are the foundations.

Discover this place of memory, insight and reconciliation. The new scenography sheds light on the historical moments of Hougoumont, with various scenes, bas-reliefs and documents. Finally, there will also be a memorial to the English troops in the courtyard.
