All cormorants are diurnal and only enter the water to forage for food. Unlike many other waterbirds, they do not rest on the water, but always on land. Here they seek out elevated places such as rocks, branches, or fenceposts, and coastal species often also ledges in steep cliffs. Some species also rest in trees or high-voltage power lines.

Over there, the diurnal birds sit and rest; at night, the trees surrounding the lake become their roosting place. While the cormorants are as black as night, the trees, their branches, and the immediate area around the water appear completely whitewashed, one might think. However, this is, of course, due to the birds' droppings.
The contrast is a bizarre sight, even from afar.
