The Schwindebach spring's headwaters discharge 60 liters of water per second. It is the second-largest spring in Lower Saxony. The small fountains created by the water pushing up from the sandy subsoil are clearly visible in the headwaters.

Metal oxides are responsible for the striking color of the headwaters. The turquoise comes from manganese oxide, the red from iron oxide.
