Hjo, an idyllic little town with a magnificently preserved wooden architecture, is an important part of Sweden's wooden town heritage.

Hic Iacet Otium! Or: Here rests peace! The initial letters of the Latin phrase form HIO, which later became HJO.

Hjo was granted its privileges as a town as early as the beginning of the 15th century - and this long history is reflected in the town's proud tradition and very special charm. Hjo, along with Eksjö in Småland and Nora in Bergslagen, is part of the network of the "Three Wooden Towns" and was awarded the Europa Nostra Medal of Honour in 1990 for its work in preserving its wooden architecture. On the cobbled streets you can explore the picturesque alleys with their well-preserved wooden houses from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
