The Goethe secondary school is located on the eastern edge of Parchim's old town on the ramparts.
The school complex was built from 1888-90 in the neo-renaissance style as the home of the Grand Ducal Friedrich Franz Gymnasium (founded in 1827, which emerged from the
large city school from 1564). A copper box with
then current documents was walled into the foundation.

Since 1991, the Goethe secondary school has shared the 2nd and 3rd floors and the Goethe elementary school
on the 1st floor. A modern computer room was installed for the secondary school in 1996. During a general overhaul from 1994 to 2003, not only were the classrooms renovated, but modern sanitary facilities were also created in the basement, and a new workshop wing and changing rooms were built next to the enlarged gymnasium.
The old buildings were cleverly set off from the modern design elements. The director's house is now used by the new schoolchildren as a separate home.
All the requirements for modern teaching are in place, with the exception of a few special rooms
for study groups.
Generations of students remember a variety of experiences in this school complex, previously under tall old chestnut trees, today in the newly designed schoolyard.
