St. Michael's Chapel, Mariazell
This late Gothic octagonal building from the end of the 15th century, with tracery round windows, was originally used as a charnel house for the storage of relics from the abandoned cemetery surrounding the church.
While masses and baptisms are often held on the upper floor, the lower floor has retained this function. The chapel takes its name from the 1754 altarpiece depicting St. Michael.

The large cross originally stood in the basilica. The roof of St. Michael's Chapel was rebuilt after the fire in 1827 and built lower than originally planned.
During restoration work in 2006, the roof was restored to its original shape.
