The Dokkumer Grootdiep runs eastwards from Dokkum to Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen. West of Dokkum lies the Dokkumer Ie. From Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen in the east it goes once - after passing the Willem Loresluis - via the Dokkumer Djip to the Lauwersmeer, and southwards to Kollum via the canals Alddjib and Sylster Ryd.
