‘Peaks Island’ is the second largest island in Casco Bay and is part of the city of Portland. The island is served several times a day by the car ferries of the ‘Casco Bay Lines’ and has its own infrastructure. There is evidence that the island has been inhabited since the mid-17th century. The origin of the name remains unclear. The inhabitants lived from fishing and were involved in agriculture. Today, day tourists ensure economic development in the summer.
The island is ideal for a walk on ‘Seashore Avenue’ along the coast around the island. Some visitors ride bicycles or rent a ‘golf cart’ to explore the island. The walk into the interior of the island and through the protected area of the ‘Peaks Island Land Preserve’ organization is worthwhile and offers a change from the small but busy ferry port on the west coast. A visit to ‘Battery Steele’, a military fortress that was completed in 1942, should not be missed during a stay on the island and is sure to be remembered.
