The two lakes west of the city on the Heuberg were created in the 20th century from the slate quarries of the former Balingen cement works. The different rock layers and their profiles are still clearly visible on the lake shore today. During the mining of the slate on the Heuberg around 1925, among other things, the fossils of a crocodile dinosaur, an ichthyosaur and a coelacanth, which is unique in the world, were discovered. Parts of the fossils are exhibited in the Landesmuseum Stuttgart.
