Embark on a challenging hike to Rifugio Pellarini, a 5.8-mile (9.3 km) journey with a significant 2145 feet (654 metres) of elevation gain. The route, which typically takes around 3 hours and 42 minutes to complete, begins in Val Saisera through dense, "musical trees" before ascending a mule track that narrows into a path skirting rocky ridges. You will cross a scree of white stones and tackle tight hairpin turns, with some sections even facilitated by ropes, before reaching the refuge which offers panoramic views of the Jôf Fuart group and Valbruna.
This difficult trail is generally considered moderately challenging for the direct ascent via CAI path 616, but the overall experience, especially if you choose to explore extensions, earns its difficult rating. The path is well-marked and accessible for those with good fitness, but be prepared for varied terrain including steeper, wilder sections if you opt for the newer return loop. Extending your hike to Sella Carnizza pass will significantly increase the difficulty, requiring extra safety gear for its steep, rocky, and via ferrata sections.
The Rifugio Pellarini trail stands out for its rapidly changing landscapes, transitioning from fairy-tale-like forests to open alpine terrain with rocky outcrops. The refuge itself, situated at 1499 meters, is a key mountaineering base in the Julian Alps and holds historical significance, having been erected in 1924 in memory of Luigi Pellarini. It is also notable for its eco-friendly practices, utilizing photovoltaic panels and operating as a plastic-free facility, offering superb views that can even extend into Slovenia from the Sella Carnizza pass.
