The Almosenturm (22.50 m high, area about 5.40 x 5.40 m) is a leftover part of the old city fortification. He is standing southeast and bordered on the now abandoned Mühlbach. It is the most beautiful tower of the fortress architect Wolze Spede and is considered the landmark of the city. Many clubs such as Heimat- und Verkehrsverein or Rotary Club Obernburg use their silhouette in their emblems. Look closely at the Almosenturm actually consists of two towers placed on top of each other. It is striking that at the Almosenturm the Aborterker is attached to the city side. Was this perhaps due to the fact that the outside flowing Mühlbach (because of the Wäschewaschplätze and the mill) should be kept free of fecal matter and these were disposed of in the city inside in the sloping direction Gumpenturm running open sewers?
The name Almosenturm is reminiscent of the Alms Foundation, an early social urban institution to support innocent impoverished citizens. 🚴♂️hvv-obernburg.de/html/stadtbefestigung.html#Tuerme
