The 15 m high bulwark is part of Lichtenberg Castle and was built in 1503.
It served to defend the outer bailey and its gate. With a wall thickness of 5.90 meters, it offered protection from attackers even after the invention of gunpowder.

Inside the bulwark there are 2 domed rooms one above the other, which are connected by a shaft. Several openings in the outer wall are used to extract powder vapors.

Above the entrance you can see a machicolation, which is used to secure the entrance and from which - as the name suggests - attackers could be doused with hot pitch.
However, it is questionable whether liquid pitch was really used here. The cramped conditions inside the bulwark would probably not have been enough to liquefy the pitch. It is assumed that other "unpleasant" liquids were used instead.
