In the 19th and early 20th centuries, this was the centre of the textile industry. Many buildings from this period are well preserved, making Norrköping's industrial landscape an exceptional sight. One of the most famous buildings is the seven-storey "Iron" (Strykjärnet), a former weaving mill and Sweden's most famous historic factory. It stands on the tiny island of Laxholmen in the Motala Ström river and seems to rise directly from the water. Today, appropriately, the Museum of Work is located here.
