The stately villa Mentheda, in a prominent location on the edge of the old centre of Middelstum, was built in 1896. In 1890, historian and alderman Jacob Vinhuizen bought the Menthedawierde. The manor of the Entens family that once stood there had already been demolished in 1738. Vinhuizen did not have a new Mentheda built on the old site, but on the other side of the road, in an eclectic style, under the architecture of Pieter Tilbusscher from Middelstum. The villa, the landscape garden, a so-called 'slingertoene', and the entrance gate are national monuments.
