According to tradition, St. Olav landed in Selånger in 1030 on his return from Gardarike (Russia) and from here began his march to Stiklestad. This place was therefore given the honorary name “St. Olav’s Harbour” and was the most important starting point for the pilgrimage to Nidaros. As the land has continued to rise, the harbour has now been closed and Sundsvall has become the new harbour.
